For most British expats, the return from the GCC is planned around schools, shipping and flights. The financial side gets left until ‘when we’re back’. By then, the most valuable decisions are usually behind you.
UK tax residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test - not your visa, your intentions, or where you pay tax today. The day you become resident is the day the UK can tax your worldwide income and gains. Returners can be caught faster than they expect: with enough UK ties, it can happen after surprisingly few days in the country.
That single date is the pivot. Before it, gains can often be repositioned outside UK CGT, lump sums and the end-of-service gratuity are generally cleaner to take, offshore wrappers are easier to restructure, and a mortgage is easier to arrange while you still have overseas income to evidence. Split-year treatment may even shelter part of your arrival year - but only if you claim it correctly.
This webinar is built to answer one personal question: what should you decide about tax, property and pensions before you move home - and in what order?
This session is particularly relevant if you are:
If two or more describe you, this is the hour to attend - and the earlier before your move, the more you can do.
