During May 2021’s budget, Australia’s then Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, unveiled plans to replace Australia’s tax residency rules for individuals with a so-called ‘bright line’ test.

These changes will be based on a Board of Taxation report issued in March 2019, in which a range of new tests were proposed. Whilst the draft legislation has not yet been tabled, many Australian expats are unaware of what they should be doing.
